The Importance of Feedback on eBay

When shopping on eBay, you’ll notice each seller has a number next to their name and sometimes have a symbol such as a star as well. If you’re new to eBay, you may wonder what this means.

Due to the anonymous nature of buying and selling on eBay, eBay runs on a feedback system to build trust between buyers and sellers. After completing a transaction, both buyers and sellers are encouraged to leave their comments about dealing with the other person. These comments are called feedback and can be rated as either positive, neutral or negative.

The number represents a score based on the number of satisfactory transactions that other buyers or sellers have rated. If an eBay member’s name looks like this, eBayMember(100), that means that eBayMember has had one hundred satisfactory transactions either buying, selling or both.

If you click on the member’s name or the number, the link will take you to their profile which offers more detail such as number of total feedback given, number of positive feedback and number of negative feedback. It will also give you a calculation as to the percentage of satisfactory transactions. A percentage of 100% means just that, 100% of the feedback was positive.

The profile also lists the number of bid retractions that member has made. This will let you know if the member has a reputation of retracting bids or if they are a serious bidder who follows through consistently.

After reading the summary, you can read the individual comments left by other members. You will see comments such as, “Fast shipping, item in excellent condition, great transaction, AAAAA+++++” or “Prompt payment, good customer”.

The symbols next to the number represent the feedback score. For example, a yellow star represents a score of between 10 and 49, a blue star is for 50 to 99 and so on. Keep in mind, these are the numbers of positive feedback and don’t reflect the percentage, so someone with a score of 12 with a yellow star has had 12 satisfactory transactions. You need to click on the link to find out if he’s had any negative feedback.

You might also see other icons or symbols next to a user’s name such as PowerSeller. PowerSellers have achieved a positive 98% or above feedback rating over many transactions and have delivered a high level of service to their buyers. This icon is the mark of an experienced eBay seller. Another icon of interest is the blue and yellow ribbon. This ribbon indicates that the seller is donating a portion of the sale to charity. If you seen any icons that you don’t understand, simply hover your mouse over it and a bit of text will display explaining the meaning of it.

Once you have completed an eBay transaction, be sure to leave feedback to the buyer or seller and keep your eyes out to view the feedback they left you. As you become more active on eBay, you will soon have enough positive feedback to warrant a star of your own.
